FOJA SUCCESS STORY - BRIDESMAID HOLLY

Holly the Rottweiller howled with approval when Travis and Sydney said their vows.

Board member Carolyn Edwards rescued a Rottweiller named "Holly" from ACPS 10 years ago. Carolyn tried to find a foster for Holly, but back then fostering wasn't well known and the one foster she found backed out when he found out she was heartworm positive. So Carolyn took in Holly and FOJA paid for her treatment at Ponte Vedra Animal Hospital. So just where is this old FOJA success story going, you ask? Well, turns out that Carolyn's son Travis adopted Holly, and she got to be in Travis’ wedding in Hiawassee, GA this past summer.  Travis says:

“Holly is not just a dog. She is part of our family, our daughter.  She has been by our side for hundreds of miles walking city streets and hiking trails from Florida to North Carolina. Where we go on trips and what restaurants we eat at are often based on whether or not we are allowed to bring our Holly girl.  We even made sure to pick a dog-friendly wedding venue. Holly was by our side when we got married and she howled with approval as we said our “I do’s”.  What a special memory we will certainly cherish for the rest of our lives.  Holly has taught us many life lessons that we will use in the future with our human children. She has taught us responsibility and unconditional love. This is truly a story of fate and we cannot imagine our life without our Holly girl.  We are so thankful to organizations like FOJA for what they do to help animals.  Without the work of their volunteers, we would not know the love and bond we have with Holly.”

The little black kitten, Mazda, was found when he crawled under……..you guessed it,  a Mazda!  He got stuck and had to be helped out by Jax Beach Animal Control.  He quickly found his forever home with a Neptune Beach City employee, Kris, along with Mama Kitty (grey tabby).

Mama Kitty was VERY pregnant when she was found.  She went to foster to have her kittens and returned to Jax Beach Animal Control kennel where all her kittens found homes, leaving her behind.  She was waiting patiently at the kennel when Kris fell in love with her!  She is now living spoiled in the lap of luxury with Kris and Mazda (now known as Mochi).
Kris shared with us…. “Mama and Mochi (Mazda) mean the world to me.  I think I am more dependent on them, than they are of me!  I love coming home after work and relaxing with them.  When I’m there, they never leave my side and we all love to cuddle together, one on either side of me lol!  I’m just glad I was lucky enough to give them a happy home for the rest of their lives!”
Donations to FOJA allowed us to cover their medical care to prepare them for adoption.
They are living happy and healthy thanks to the public’s support of FOJA.

JOIN OUR ONLINE AUCTION

FOJA has been gathering a storeroom of great items that would normally been part of in-person auctions at fundraising events.  With COVID, we’ve had to significantly limit our events, so we are sharing all these goodies with you via an online weekly auction posted on our Facebook page.  Two items will be posted most Mondays (and ending the following Thursday).  All proceeds go directly to help the homeless pets in our community.

If you are a business owner and would like to donate a gift basket, service, or item, email alicia@friendsofjaxanimals.com.  Maybe you received some wonderful Christmas gifts that you just don’t have a need for.  Don’t let them gather dust, consider donating them and allow us to auction them off.  “One man’s trash...”

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: FIDELITY

We were super excited to hear from Penelope Thompson with Fidelity that Fidelity has donated $5,000 to FOJA.  We received the check and immediately put it to good use helping ACPS animals.

THANK YOU FIDELITY!

WORKING HOMES NEEDED FOR WORKING CATS

Traditional homes aren’t for every cat but we think they still deserve a chance. If you have a shop, barn or garage that could use a working cat, let ACPS know! Working cats will help keep you rodent free in exchange for a place to call home. The cats in this program are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, ear tipped & microchipped. They need access to shelter, food and water and a safe confined area to stay while they adjust to their new home. If you can provide a second chance to a kitty who would prefer to live outside, please email ACPS at jaxpets@coj.net or visit the shelter in person.

WJXT CHANNEL 4'S PET PROJECT

Remember to tune in every Saturday morning at approximately 8:50 am to WJXT Channel 4’s Pet Project where FOJA highlights a beautiful dog or cat available for adoption at Animal Care & Protective Services, along with upcoming events and adoption tips.

ACPS's "Secret Santa" this year has been wonderful. Even with COVID craziness, they exceeded the number of Secret Santas from last year! In a field where it’s easy to lose hope at times, seeing not only the donations come in, but also the sweet notes sent with them are a reminder that there are many good people out there too. One Secret Santa sent in donations in honor of their sweet girl Louise that they adopted from ACPS and has since passed. Many Secret Santas came in to the shelter with their children to present the gifts in person to their selected dog or cat. It was heartwarming to see the children learn that shelter pets are just like any other pet that just needs a little compassion and love.

One Secret Santa made a gift basket specifically for a sweet pup getting medical attention. Some of the animals pictured here are: long-timer Lexi, Hachi, Bette,Lizzie, Bowser, Little Carl, Bruno, Fudge, Emjay, and Delaney.  You can see on their faces that the pups and kits were enjoying the spirit of the holidays! Every year, the donations that come in anonymously are given to other animals at the shelter that may not be available for adoption yet and need some extra love.

URGENT SHELTER NEEDS

Animal Care & Protective Services can always benefit from supply donations. Current needs include:
  • Chewies (learn why dogs need to chew)
  • Vienna Sausages/hot dogs (the Behavior Department has found Vienna sausages to be great for making friends with the pups)
  • Beef Tracheas (we fill them and use them for dogs that need higher value enrichment)
  • Block cheese (the vet staff has found that block cheese is a great snack to hide needed medications)
  • Canned kitten food (preferably Purina Pro-plan or Fancy Feast)
Supplies can be delivered to the shelter at 2020 Forest Street, Jacksonville FL 32204, Tues-Sun 12pm-6pm.
You can also have supplies delivered directly to the shelter by purchasing via the shelter'
s Amazon wish list.
